Kyiv (Kiev) is the capital of Ukraine. It celebrated its 1500th anniversary.
Kyiv was and through centuries remained the cultural centre and a major cradle for the Kievska Rus. Its most famous historical architecture complexes are the St. Sophia Cathedral and the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves), which are recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
